CA Taxpayers Pay $100,000 For Inmate’s Sex Change Operation

A California inmate will undergo a $100,000 procedure to make her into a man. Unfortunately for taxpayers, this is not the plot of season three of Netflix’s Orange is the New Black.
Thanks to the ruling of U.S. District Judge Jon Tigar, California residents will be footing the bill for the procedure.
In his 38-page ruling, Tigar wrote that the state had violated the rights of Michelle-Lael Norsworthy by not providing for the costly and medically unnecessary procedure.

“Norsworthy has presented compelling evidence suggesting that prison officials deliberately ignored her continuing symptoms of gender dysphoria and the recognized standards of care,” the judge wrote.

He concluded without such a procedure, Norsworthy would be at risk of depression and suicide. She has been serving a prison term since 1987 for second degree murder.
In January, a federal appeals court upheld a similar ruling from a lower circuit decision in Boston which ordered the state of Massachusetts to provide inmate Robert Kosilek with the procedure necessary for him to become a woman.
“And receiving medically necessary treatment is one of those rights, even if that treatment strikes some as odd or unorthodox,” the federal court said.

Despite that opinion, there is no evidence that such a procedure is medically necessary. In fact, studies have shown that changing genders has no real effect on eliminating depression, anxiety, or thoughts of suicide.
After studying more than 100 post-operation transsexuals, the University of Birmingham’s Aggressive Research Intelligence Facility found no evidence that the procedure benefited these individuals in anyway regarding their mental health. Research from the US and Holland suggest as many as 20% regret changing their gender.

Those studies suggests what others have, that gender dysphoria is a mental condition, and that allowing those inflicted to surgically alter their bodies does not cure them. Despite this, liberals demand that such disorders be treated medically instead of psychiatrically.
