Mom who took son into hiding to save his foreskin, sobs in court as she signs consent for circumcision

A Florida woman jailed in a long-running dispute over her son’s circumcision has been released after nine nights behind bars.
Heather Hironimus, 31, has been portrayed as a martyr by anti-circumcision advocates.
Hironimus and her four-year-old-son’s father, Dennis Nebus, have been warring for years over whether to have the boy’s foreskin removed. She initially agreed in a parenting agreement filed in court, then changed her mind, giving way to a long legal fight. Circuit and appellate judges have sided with the father.
With her legal options dwindling, Hironimus went missing in February, and ignored a judge’s order that she appear in court and give her consent for the surgery to be performed. A warrant was issued, but she wasn’t located until May 14 at a Broward County shelter where she was staying with her son.
Brought before Judge Jeffrey Gillen on Friday, Hironimus again declined to sign a consent form for the surgery, and she was advised she would remain jailed indefinitely. After the hearing recessed and she reconsidered, she reluctantly agreed to sign, sobbing as she put pen to paper.
Though the signature solved a contempt charge against her, she still faces a criminal charge of interference with child custody.
Lawyers for both the mother and father have declined to comment, citing an ongoing gag order in the case. The parents had a six-month relationship but were never married. The father has called circumcision “just the normal thing to do.”
In court, the father’s attorney said the surgery had not yet been scheduled, but Gillen gave him sole authority, temporarily, for the boy’s medical decisions, and granted a motion to allow him to travel out-of-state to have the procedure completed.
The woman’s mother, Mary Hironimus, said “intactivists” — anti-circumcision activists — planned to reach out to doctors around the country to urge them not to perform the circumcision.
Georganne Chapin, executive director of Intact America, which advocates against circumcision, said the images of a distraught Heather Hironimus signing the form to allow the surgery show how she was “bullied” into it and that she doesn’t truly give her consent.
“If anyone finds out the circumstances under which she signed, a doctor would be insane to carry out that surgery,” she said.

  1. Forcing circumcision on a minor who cannot protest or assent. So, this is different from African tribes forcing clitoredectomies on young girls, how? Despite denials from some in the medical establishment, this is nothing more than the continuation of an Old Testament tradition.

Well first off frankw, we are not in f-cking Africa and who cares about the old testament, did you think you had a valid point?
Should a court be making a mother give consent for this? Hell NO!

Forcing the mother to go along with an antiquated 'medical', (& religious), procedure of questionable value, to be performed upon a small child (who obviously, has absolutely no say in the manner,) all because of the father's ideals of 'normalcy', seems pretty draconian to me....
I have unpleasant weird early memories of it myself ( lotsa old school women thought it was more 'sanitary' {cringe} )...

Everything I have ever signed has been under duress.

To all the people out there who think it's the "normal" thing to do, it's not. In fact, it's much more pleasurable for her when he's not circumcised so you're actually doing him a favor by not having the surgery.

What do you think you are Free person? .... besides the Rabbi is waiting to taste the little wang.

  8. Heather should never agreed in the first place and that is why she has the legal problem. Circumcision is a degrading act against humanity. Started out as Old Testament tribal mutilation ritual to the jews angry god and through ignorance or a bad joke forced upon American children. No, its not normal, healthy or religious.....its criminal mutilation!

Just when I think that I've seen it all!

This loving MOTHER, after bringing forth her son and caring for him, decides that she wouldn't that he be circumcised. And the courts/legislatures/sovereigns FORCE HER to let a doctor do it to him, just because his father demands it?

God Almighty, it never fails to astonish me how our irrational, self-destructive pursuit of "women's equality" has utterly dehumanized us!

With all due respect, OM, this in no way to relates to the timeless wisdom of the Ancients, or however one wishes to interpret it.

Rather, it relates to her rightful, God-given place as a MOTHER to affirm the rights of her SONS as however she sees fit—provided that she not do so to the point of abuse or neglect. A right that this male chauvinist judge has wrongfully misappropriated.

I've lived in Florida for almost 9 years now, and I say (without hesitation) that it is, by far, the most misogynistic, androcentric place in America—if not on Earth!

    Two words: Terri Shiavo.

I stopped believing that shortly after the Cold War ended.

Namely, when I came home late at night, from a date with a girl, and fell asleep in front the TV—only to be reminded by Darth Vader that I was watching CNN.

    Only in New York!

"Just the normal thing to do"??? Circumcision is genital mutilation, pure and simple. Sounds like the 'father' isn't a bright fellow.

Ritual? I thought circumcision might have resulted as a pragmatic way of dealing with cleanliness issues while lost in a desert for 40 years.
