John Lopez was born and raised on a ranch in western South Dakota, and he already had a successful career as a bronze sculptor when he stumbled into the art form of welded statues. This story begins with a tragedy. After the loss of a beloved aunt, Effie Hunt, in a rollover car accident, Lopez went to his widowed uncle’s ranch to build a family cemetery where his aunt would be the first to be interred.

While building the cemetery gate, he ran out of material and visited a nearby scrap yard to find more. The ranch is 35 miles from the nearest town or post office, so he went looking through the scrap iron on site. Lopez used the metal he found to weld a beautiful gate and an angel for the cemetery. The project gave him much personal satisfaction and everyone who saw it was amazed at the result.

“I am a sculptor and love to create. I started welding sculptures together using scrap iron after my aunt’s death. I built a cemetery around her headstone on the ranch and it all started from there” said Lopez.
