Great-grandma, 80, guns down intruder after crowbar beating

An 80-year-old great-grandmother shot and killed an intruder after he entered her home and attacked her husband, according to KOMO.
Barb Moles, 80, fired four shots, hitting the suspect three times.
Moles was home with her husband, John, and their adult son on the night of April 28 when she said she heard a commotion. She walked into the kitchen and found John lying on the floor bleeding from a stab wound. John had also been beaten with a crowbar by the intruder.
Moles said she walked down the hall and into the master bedroom, retrieving her .38 caliber pistol. There, she waited behind the door for the intruder to come in.
When the intruder did not attempt to come into the bedroom, Moles stepped into the hall and encountered him. It was there that she shot the suspect.
"I felt like if I hadn't, my son and I might both be dead and my husband might have bled to death on the kitchen floor," Moles told KOMO. "You know, never in my whole life did I ever anticipate having to take another life -- especially at age 80."
The suspect was identified as Steven N. Sheppard, 25, of Gold Bar, Washington. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators believe Sheppard was trying to steal prescription drugs from the home.
Moles said she wouldn't hesitate if facing down another intruder.
"You know how mothers are with their kids. That's the way I am with my husband," she told KOMO. "I just protect his back. I'm not just the typical granny -- in case you haven't noticed."
