A four-year-old boy has died after accidentally shooting himself in the head with a gun he found in an Iowa mobile home.

The boy's mother brought her son and a younger child to visit a friend in the small city of Elgin.

Authorities said the mother and friend stepped outside, leaving the four-year-old and a younger child alone in the home around 2.30pm on Friday.

That is when the boy, whose name has not been released, shot himself with a handgun.

Police received two 911 calls about the shooting, with the second caller reporting that a child had been shot and was unconscious, according to The Gazette.

One witness saw the mother running to a nearby business, screaming for help.

The boy was found with a gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Fayette County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities said the gun was legally owned by the homeowner, who was not at home at the time of the shooting, according to KWWL.

No arrests have been made.

The Fayette County Sheriff's Office said the investigation is ongoing.
