Arizona cops surround, pummel man in gut-wrenching footage

Four officers were sidelined Tuesday as brutal surveillance footage emerged showing cops encircling a man and beating him without relent in an Arizona apartment building.
Mesa Police Chief Ramon Batista, struggling to explain the startling show of force, promised to follow through with an ongoing probe into the attack, he said Tuesday, according to 12 News.
The cops are currently on paid leave, Batista said.
The video begins with a man — who cops say was a friend of a domestic violence suspect — checking his cell phone as he stands next to an elevator bank in a Mesa apartment building.
Police say they instructed him to sit down, and he refused to comply — but the newly released clip shows officers almost immediately surrounding the man before uncorking a flurry of closed fists to his face and knees to his midsection.
More officers then emerge from the elevator and join in on the melee, the footage shows.
Batista said a civilian brought the “alarming” video to his attention. The department ultimately made it public Tuesday alongside its announcement of the officers’ suspensions.
