Dozens of people spend the night in Newark Airport on Thursday after being grounded by Winter Storm Avery, the first Nor'Easter of the season 
People slept on the floor, surrounded by their bags, with nowhere to go because the roads to and from the airport were impassable and gridlocked and the hotels nearby were full 
People abandoned vehicles and got out of the back of taxis on their way to Newark on Thursday to walk the remainder of the journey after being stuck for up to six hours in traffic 
There were people at JFK  who were also forced to spend the night.

At Liberty Middle School in West Orange, it was not safe enough for parents to collect their children so they spent the night with teachers sleeping on gym mats and watching movies
