Avolunteer at a megachurch in South Carolina has been accused of abusing at least 13 other children in a three-month timespan — and was caught on camera molesting a three-year-old inside the church.
The Christian Post reported that officials at Charleston, SC’s NewSpring Church were “gutted” to learn about the sexual abuse allegations against 28-year-old volunteer chaperone and daycare worker Jacop Hazlett
“We want our NewSpring family to know that as the leaders of this church we are gutted by these events,” a statement provided by NewSpring communications director Suzanne Swift said. “We know this happened on our watch, and though we have taken great measures over the years to protect our children, evil found a way to breach our best efforts.”
The report noted that during his Sunday sermon, Teaching Pastor Brad Cooper referenced Satan when discussing the Hazlett allegations.
“We will not let the enemy cause us to back up, to cower, to insulate ourselves,” he said the Sunday after the allegations came to light.
Joshua Slavin, the lawyer who represents the family of the three-year-old Hazlett was reportedly filmed abusing, said there may be more victims than they’re aware of.
“There could be countless victims out there,” he said. “We only know of 14 from the last 90 days.”
When the news was first reported, Charleston’s Post-Courier newspaper reported that news of Hazlett’s alleged abuse came soon after NewSpring associate Caleb Lide Jordan was charged with soliciting sex with a minor.
